This map below shows the 17 International Geosphere Biosphere Programme (IGBP) scene types (+ Olson Tundra) projected onto a 10' equal angle map. This map is determined using a 1km map of IGBP scene types supplied by USGS. The map shown is derived by histogramming the different IGBP types within each 10' grid box, then selecting the most prevalant scene to represent that box. For use in CERES processing, each IGBP scene type is assigned an albedo, and a mean albedo for the 10' box is calculated. The average albedo for the box is then compared with the albedos of the IGBP scenes within the box and IGBP albedo closest to the mean is used as the scene type for the box.

The second image below shows the locations where the most prevalant scene type method varies from the mean albedo method. Over the globe, the maps are different in about 8% of the 10' boxes.
